What Is Ductless Air Conditioning?
Ductless air conditioning units allow individuals to cool their homes without the use of a central air duct system. The window-mounted air conditioning unit is an example of a ductless air conditioner. These are pretty popular and have proven to be a pretty effective way to keep a room or two cool. Even so, the window air conditioning unit is not the most efficient way to cool ones home. The split system air conditioning unit is much more efficient example of a ductless air conditioner.
Ductless air conditioning units or systems aren’t as common in newer homes. This of course, is dependent upon what part of the country the home is being built. New homes in areas where the climate is cool most of the year might utilize ductless air conditioning because there is not a great need for central air. Homes built in climates that are very hot, at least part of the year, are more likely to include central air conditioning.
Older homes are most apt to have some sort of ductless air conditioning system or none at all. Those that live in such homes that do not have any type of built-in cooling system may need to install their own. The easiest ductless air conditioning units to install are probably the window-mounted ones. Window-mounted air conditioning units are inexpensive, readily available and easy to place in ones home
Split system duct air conditioning is another option. Some people prefer it to the window-mounted unit, which tends to be unattractive and restricted in its ability to cool a large area of ones home. Below, we will discuss these two types of ductless air conditioning units in more detail.
Types of Ductless Air Conditioning
Spit system ductless air conditioning units are made up of dual components. One is the fan unit which disperses cool air. Fan units are always placed inside the home. The other part of the component is placed outdoors. It is a refrigerant unit and works by cooling the air and getting rid of condensation.
Ductless air conditioning units that utilize a split system are manufactured to keep a single room cool, though there are some on the market with more then one fan unit. The latter use a single thermostat to control each of the system’s fans, which can be placed in separate rooms. Fans utilized in single ductless air conditioning systems may be mounted in the ceiling or on a wall. They are oftentimes quite small and thus don’t cause much disruption stylistically. In fact, they can be hidden with special covers and grills.
Split system ductless air conditioners are an option for homeowners who do not have a central duct system, referred to by many people as “central air.” They might also be used by those whose homes do have heating ducts, but again, not central air. Installing ducts can be costly. Subsequently, many people will opt not to. They will instead, purchase some sort of ductless air conditioning unit, whether that is a window-mounted unit or a split system one. Individuals that live in areas where the climate is pretty cool may find that a ductless air conditioning unit is more cost effective then having central air installed in their homes.
Window-mounted air conditioners are another type of ductless air conditioning “system.” These are generally inexpensive and are a decent option for individuals on a budget and also for those who live in smaller homes. In homes that do not have a great deal of square footage, a few window-mounted units can keep the air inside a large portion of the home cool. Utilizing this particular type of ductless air conditioner for a larger home would be more expensive because more units would have to be purchased. However, it is likely to be less costly then having a central duct system installed.
The Benefits
There are numerous benefits associated with the use of ductless air conditioners. We will discuss some of the benefits for the split air conditioning system first.
It will cost a homeowner much less money to have a split air conditioning system installed then it would a ducted system. The latter might require the removal and then replacement of dry wall. This can result in quite a mess, will likely interfere with day-to-day life (even if only temporarily) and can get pretty expensive. Installing a split air conditioner is faster, requires less of a mess and cheaper then a ducted system. The latter also tends to demand a greater amount of maintenance then a ductless one, another reason to go with a ductless air conditioning system.
Ductless systems are also much more energy efficient then ducted systems. Today, we are live in a world where much more emphasis is being placed on taking care of the environment and reducing our carbon footprints and the strain we place on the earth. Having a ductless system installed in ones home is a great way to use less energy. Ductless systems only cool those rooms that are most often used by a home’s occupants. This is because they can only be installed in a single room and individual tend to choose those that are used most often. Rooms that are not used as much are not cooled via air conditioning because homeowners don’t bother placing units in them. This automatically lessens the amount of energy being used and wasted in ones home.
